Women’s Health Q & A

What is a well woman exam?

Well woman exams are health visits focused on addressing a woman’s reproductive health needs. While many aspects of health and wellness apply to both sexes equally, women have a unique set of needs, which is why women’s health services are available.

A well woman exam offers a chance to get the screenings you need based on your overall health and your age. As you progress through the phases of life, those needs will shift and change.

Your well woman exams during your 20s will have a different focus than the visits you’ll have during middle age and beyond. DOCCS also offers adolescent gynecology services for teens.

A pelvic exam is usually part of the process of well women visits. The simple screening allows Dr. Sahay to visually inspect your vagina and cervix for signs of tissue abnormalities. Pap smear testing can also be performed during pelvic exams and is an outstanding diagnostic tool for cervical cancer.

What are some topics that can be broached during women’s health visits?

The best way to make the most out of your well woman exams is to find a practitioner that you feel comfortable with. No topic is off-limits during well woman exams, and you are encouraged to broach any women’s health topic you like.

Some of the issues that arise during well woman exams include:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Birth control
  • Fertility planning
  • Mammography
  • Breast health
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer and other female cancers
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) prevention and treatment
  • Sexual health
  • Pap Smear
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Menopause
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low sex drive
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Osteoporosis

These are just some of the topics you might wish to discuss with Dr. Sahay during your next well woman exam. It can be helpful to write your questions down prior to your visit to make sure you don’t forget anything.

How often do I need to come in for well woman exams?

Most women benefit from an annual well woman exam. If your last Pap smear screening did not reveal signs of concern, you might not need to have the test repeated at the next visit.

Annual visits ensure that any changes are assessed within a relatively short period. The information gleaned during your well woman exams is added to your personal medical record.

If you are experiencing a gynecologic condition, you may need to come in more frequently until the matter is resolved. If your needs require specialized care, Dr. Sahay will help you find the right practitioner.

When you’re ready to book a visit, online scheduling is fast and easy. You are also welcome to call or stop by the office to set up your next visit.
